Here in the South, most guys carry around a knife and I’ve submitted to that belief. This knife is lightweight enough, and definitely sharp enough for anything I’ll need it for.

I bought myself one of these for my birthday a couple months ago. It’s a Higo Knife I bought from Best Made Co. In their email this week there is an article on how to care for the knife so I thought I’d share.

When’s the next Grok you ask? Well that’s a hot little question. We’re asking ourselves that same question now, but I’d be surprised if we’ll be able to wait a whole year till the next one. There is a rumor that we may throw the next one in Brooklyn somewhere near The Beer Table, but I can’t confirm that.

I heard about Grok on Twitter that day it happened and was quite intrigued. I was even more so because it was in Greenville. I hope the next time it comes up, these guys won’t mind a nobody crashing the party and getting in the middle of what were surely some really great discussions. I think something like this could be great for folks new to the scene, like myself, to be able to meet and talk with well-respected thinkers, designers, programmers, writers, etc. Without being able to afford going to some of those big conferences, it could be hard to meet people who live all over the states, but I have no qualms with hanging with the superstars of the Upstate; there are plenty. Just hope to get my foot in that door next time it comes around, especially if it’s in Brooklyn. I’d go to Brooklyn to hang with these guys.

With some exceptions, what some call a pessimist, I call a realist; and I call myself that. I love a good bit of advice from another realist because I can trust it much easier. Bill Withers comes off as a realist in tis short trailer and says,

It’s okay to head out to wonderful, but on your way to wonderful you gonna have to pass through alright. And when you get to alright, take a good look around and get used to it, cos that may be as far as you’re gonna go.

Being normal will always be easier on your heart, mind, and body. I don’t want to be normal, and I’m trying to become more OK with putting myself through the toughness that is exposure.

Mom's Birthday

My mother’s turning 49 years old on Monday. She’s mentioned wanting to run a marathon when she’s 50 years old. I’m no expert, but it seems necessary to start training in the 49th year. More recently than she told us her dream to run a marathon, she has quit that dream and decided to be an “admirer of runners” instead. As her first son, or, just as someone who loves her, I want to see her succeed. I want that so much that it may affect my life. She couldn’t get motivated because she couldn’t find a running partner. After some thought, I decided to sacrifice my love of walking, riding, sitting, fighting, anything not running to (possibly) help her dream come true. I’m designing a print for her birthday that not only gives her another chance to jump on the running train, but offers my partnership as well.

Here’s a few “shots” of my progress. Though the idea was in my mind long before this due date, I procrastinated doing all kinds of other work and designed this in a few midnight hours.

I’m still not really sure where I’m going. Keep thinking angles…Pegasus…Nike…marathon…

I may be on to something…

I think I’m liking where this is at, though I need some finishing touches, it’s 5 a.m., I’ve watched half a season of Scrubs and I just can’t think of any. That is to say, it feels kind of boring, and I have never screen printed before, which is what I’ll be doing with this. I’m not sure what exactly is going to translate and how well.

This is the last one, til tomorrow morning maybe. I don’t what other touches to put, and it’s time to be done. The best work is done on time. I want a cloud in the air, but I can’t make it look right – here it is. Happy Birthday Mom. I hope you turn this offer down. (And I hope you don’t see this before I print it.)

I did this a couple weeks ago at work. I love when I can tell how much time and energy I save by starting with words on paper instead of going straight to graphics on the computer. There were 4 pages of notes and research before I did the sheets you see here. And after those, I drew out graphics on 2 more pieces of paper before touching the mouse. The hard part was over, I was just left to get it done.
